We were especially impressed by the spaciousness of each bag, especially considering the relatively light weight for the size. “The large checked bag was enormous and easily able to fit everything on the list with room to spare,” says Senior Writer Merrell Readman. “Both bags are expandable, but I only needed to use that feature on the carry-on — it added enough space that I was able to comfortably zip it with a heel sticking out.” Even when expanded, Readman had no trouble fitting the carry-on suitcase into the overhead compartment on our T+L airplane set. The zippers glided smoothly, even when the bags were packed to the brim, and the multidirectional spinner wheels proved “very easy to roll over a range of different surfaces.”

The bags’ polycarbonate shells were quite durable — they survived being beaten by baseball bats in our lab without any scuffs. (I have carried a different luggage set by the brand across many trips for nearly a decade, and every piece is still as good as new.) For all this strength and resilience, you might suspect a rugged-looking set, but this set is pleasantly stylish, and Readman especially loved the daisy-print interior of the green set.

Though neither suitcase is expandable, T+L Associate Editor Anna Popp found each piece plenty spacious for a variety of bulky items nonetheless. "The backpack and suitcases have just the right number of pockets to stay naturally organized without feeling overwhelmed with spaces to put things and losing them," Popp says. She appreciated that each suitcase came with a shoe bag, and the backpack had useful travel features like a detachable front pouch and a 15-inch laptop compartment.

During testing, we thought it was manageable to travel with all bags at once, especially since you can choose to either wear the backpack, or slide it over the suitcase handle using the trolley sleeve. The handles on the two suitcases were sturdy and easy adjust to comfortable heights, though it required a little bit of effort to push and pull the suitcases over rough surfaces. We wish the wheels rolled just a little bit more smoothly, but we still loved the variety of bags, the organizational features, and the color customization of this set.

One of the oldest and most trusted luggage brands around, Samsonite luggage consistently overperforms in our lab tests, and we even tested the Freeform Carry-on three separate times to make sure it deserves the top spot as our all-time favorite carry-on, where it still reigns supreme. This versatile set offers great value with one carry-on and one large checked suitcase, both reliable options that are fairly priced and durable to withstand the test of time. Both suitcases offer simple yet effective internal organization, including straps, a small zippered pocket, and a large zippered compartment. They are both expandable when you need a little bit more packing room (the checked suitcase expands more than the carry-on does), and we found them both easy to maneuver with smooth, 360-degree wheels. While the carry-on has two adjustable heights on the handle, the checked bag handle only has one height option. Since this set only comes with two suitcase, it's very easy to travel with both at once, especially if you line them up back to back so that you can hold both handles at once and roll the bags as one unit. Since we've tested Samsonite Freeform suitcases multiple times, we know they're durable in the long-term, too.

Softside bags can offer more flexibility for packing and squeezing in extra items, and this trio of softside suitcases floored us with its massive capacity in relation to its weight. The deep interiors were well organized with mesh zippered pockets, compression straps, and exterior zippered compartments, and there was plenty of room to fit everything on our packing list, even without using the expansion features (all of the bags can expand 2 inches). It's also the most spacious set out of everything else on this list, with capacities ranging from 51 liters for the carry-on, 91 liters for the smaller of the two checked bags, and 142 liters for the largest checked bag (that's huge!).

The set is lightweight and features smooth zippers and telescopic handles that adjust to two positions for improved control. The high-quality hardware and fabrics held up well when we threw the bags off tables and hit them with baseball bats, showing minimal wear. The polyester fabric has a water- and stain-resistant coating that is less likely to dent than most hardside bags. We found it a little tricky to maneuver all three bags onto a curb at once, though each bag completed the same task individually with ease. Though the bags were smooth to roll, three suitcases can be a lot for a solo traveler, so you may want to get a luggage strap to help haul the full set at once.

We’d be hard pressed to find a better value for a high-performing trio of suitcases than this affordable Amazon bundle that averages out to about $50 per suitcase when you purchase them as a set. It comes with one carry-on and two checked suitcases (one medium, one large). In our tests, the luggage was comparable to much pricier models in terms of durability, functionality, and maneuverability. That being said, the designs are straightforward and basic without many special features or color options that you'd find with more luxe brands.

All three pieces held up well during drop and baseball bat tests, and all of the handles and wheels glided easily without snags. We found the bags impressively spacious as well, and they're expandable. “Each of these bags was roomy to the point where we almost ran out of packing items for the largest suitcase,” says Senior Editor Jasmine Grant, who easily packed bulky jackets, sweaters, and boots. Like the Samsonite Freeform, we’ve also tested the carry-on size two other times in the T+L lab, so we can attest to its durability — it’s even our best overall pick out of all the affordable luggage pieces we’ve ever tried.

There are several set options to choose from, but we love the Aviator Trio Set, which includes a carry-on, a medium checked suitcase, and an even larger trunk. This is one of the pricier sets on this list, but the chic aesthetics make a statement, and we love that the suitcases use recycled materials for sustainability.

None of the suitcases are expandable, though they're all quite spacious to begin with. The carry-on is well-organized with a removable divider for dirty clothes, but it lacks additional interior pockets. Though it felt sturdy, the exterior did show minor scuffs and dings after we hit it with a metal baseball bat. While it rolled smoothly on hard floors and carpet, it struggled on gravel. The trunk, on the other hand, is massive, and its 30/70 design makes packing easy and efficient. We appreciated the interior pockets, which helped break up the space. Despite its large size, it glided effortlessly on its wheels, even over rough terrain. Another bonus: the Paravel Aviator Trunk is our favorite travel trunk that we've ever tested.

Checked suitcases are subjected to rough and tumble, so durability is key. In our tests, Samonite’s Pivot line was the most durable to withstand drops and baseball bat hits without sustaining any scuffs or dents on the textured polycarbonate exterior, which also repelled dirt and lint. All three suitcases were impressively spacious and even expandable for an extra 1.5 inches of packing space. Still, we wished there had been more interior pockets for organization, and you may want to use packing cubes with this set to better organize your items. It’s also worth noting that these cases were rather heavy, which is likely due to their rigid materials. We struggled to heave the largest bag onto a table and had more difficulty lifting the carry-on into the overhead bin than most when fully packed. Keep in mind that if you do use the expandability features and pack even more into the bags, they may feel bulky and weigh you down. Regardless, we had no issues rolling them through our obstacle courses when packed full, and the handles all worked smoothly, though we wish the largest bag had more than one handle height.

Rather than hunting for a bulky baggage cart, we recommend this nifty luggage set with heavy-duty Velcro straps that conveniently attach all three pieces together, making it easy for one person to roll the full set at once. The latches are “seriously heavy duty,” confirms Associate Editor Anna Popp — the bags didn’t even detach when she tossed them off a table together.

The adjustable pulling strap made it seamless to roll them all together as one. “I was impressed with how easy it was to get around the tight turns,” Popp says. “These also rolled over the pavers way easier than I thought they would.” Utilizing all three pieces, you should easily be able to pack for extended trips. Power bank ports and a water bottle holder are nice touches. One thing to note is that the zippers weren’t as sturdy as other brands we tested, and they snagged around the corners, and the outer materials sustained some dents during our toss tests.

We found both suitcases comfortably spacious and appreciated the ample organizational features including dividers with mesh pockets, clips, compression straps with buckles, and a cylindrical zip pocket. The 80/20 design on the larger trunk made it especially convenient to pack.

These trunks are quite heavy, with the carry-on weighing 8.4 pounds and the checked size weighing 13.2 pounds, but they're smooth to wheel flat on all four wheels so that you're not pulling the weight behind you or straining your arms. Though we love the beautiful glossy finish that we tested, we found that it scuffs easily and collects dark marks when we travel with it, so you may want to consider a matte finish if that would bother you.

Quince is known for its high-quality basics at a fraction of traditional retail costs. This two-piece suitcase set stands up to pricier models, but it’ll only set you back $300. Though these bags are fairly standard in terms of design, they stand out when it comes to handling. “These were so incredibly easy to maneuver, especially considering I was pulling and pushing two bags together,” says editor Taylor Fox. “They took turns like a dream and went over rough surfaces without any issue at all.” The handles were soft-to-the-touch, and each worked on two easy-to-adjust heights.

Though neither suitcase is expandable, we didn’t miss the option since the interiors were so large and spacious. They both have interior compressional panels and removable laundry bags. Though they felt durable during our lab tests, the materials felt more flimsy than some other brands. They did not get damaged though other than scuff marks. Overall, the smooth wheels make them very easy to travel with as a set.
