Our Testing Process

We tested nine different luggage racks to find our favorites for this article. First, we unpacked and assembled each luggage rack, noting the quality and sturdiness of the materials and the ease of setup. Next we tested the rack’s stability by placing various types of luggage on top, from wheeled carry-ons to larger suitcases. We did the same for the rack’s bottom shelf where relevant. We repeated this process on a range of floor surfaces from carpet to tile and hardwood to see if the luggage racks were wobbly on different types of flooring. 

In total we used each rack at least three times during a two-week testing period, including as a surface for packing a wheeled carry-on. Over this time we noted its structural integrity under different loads, any special features and their usefulness, how long the rack took to set up and take down, how compact it was when folded, and how well it fit into standard storage spaces such as a closet or under the bed. Our favorites were the luggage racks that performed well for stability, durability, design, ease of storage, and value, with long-term testing still ongoing for another six month.

Think about the size of your luggage

All luggage racks have slightly different dimensions, so it’s important to make sure that whichever one you choose is big enough to support your largest suitcase — both in terms of length and weight when fully packed. When considering measurements, think about how big your suitcase is when open for packing; obviously, the rack will need to be able to support it in this position to fulfill its purpose properly. While buying a rack that’s big enough for your needs is essential, you should also consider the storage space you have available and how well the rack will fit into it when folded away. Most product descriptions include measurements for the rack in its open and folded positions so that you can make the most informed choice.

Consider two-tier shelving

I personally appreciate when a vacation rental or hotel room has a two-tiered luggage rack, because it gives me somewhere to place my shoes or hiking boots without worrying about getting dirt on someone else’s carpet. A luggage rack with two shelves could be ideal at home, too, giving you extra storage space for shoes, a backpack, personal item, or even your carry-on, allowing you to store both luggage pieces in one convenient place.
